Below are the links to the tragedy in Samsun where the flood caused by the heavy rain affected the relocation site constructed by the Mass Housing Administration TOKI, the most powerful state institution ofTurkey.
Mostly kids, 10 were drowned in the basement floors.
The population had been evicted and relocated to the site, to these ''modern''! houses in 2011 despite warnings from relevant chambers that the site is a stream bed.
TOKI houses for low-income groups and relocated populations are very poor in quality and now they have proven to be unsafe as well. AGFE Istanbul report had brought up the issue back in 2009.
Unfortunately, it is this same TOKI which will start undertaking the renewal of millions of houses in Turkey by means of the new Law on Disasters which is a human rights violation by itself.The main motive is not to build safe cities but to appropriate urban rent.
