Activists Convene at Internet Governance Forum

This week, Freedom House is sponsoring a group of internet freedom activists and independent journalists from Southeast Asia at the third annual Asia-Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF) in Tokyo, Japan. In addition to raising issues of internet freedom in all plenary sessions, Freedom House is co-organizing two interactive sessions with the Southeast Asian Centre for e-Media (SEACeM), Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA), and the Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA).

On Thursday, July 19, the panel “Internet for Asia: Space for Free Expression & Information” will discuss the importance of protecting rights to freedom of opinion, expression and access to information in cyberspace, refuting the idea of “Asian values” that deemphasize individual liberties. On Friday, July 20, “Civil Society in Internet Governance and Policymaking” will explore the role of civil society in internet governance, as well as the need for truly multi-stakeholder participation in various policy forums.  Following the APrIGF, the civil society delegation plans to release a joint statement of recommendations on internet freedom to the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), looking ahead to November’s global IGF in Baku, Azerbaijan, and the 2013 global IGF, which may be held in Indonesia.
