South East Asia Legal Advocacy Training of Trainers
The
development of
human rights promotion and protection in Southeast Asia region has come
under
the spotlight due to the drafting process of the ASEAN Human Rights
Declaration
(AHRD), a document which will serve as the basis for
the
establishment of a framework for human rights cooperation among the
ASEAN
State Members. The lack of
transparency and engagement with civil society has its
share in blistering the concerns from inside and outside the region.
Having
an evolutionary progression of human rights in the Southeast Asia
region is very optimistic. Indeed, the ASEAN’s Human Rights System is
still in
its infancy; however, there are plenty of opportunities to develop ideal
standards. A crucial missing
component in current advocacy efforts targeting the
ASEAN system is a strong cadre of lawyers with the necessary legal
advocacy
skills to help bolster the system. Given their legal
expertise, notably in defending human rights cases, lawyers are
especially
needed in the advocacy of human rights in ASEAN.
To
initiate a network of lawyers with the necessary legal advocacy skills
to engage with the regional human rights system, Jakarta Legal Aid
Institute
(LBH Jakarta) and the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative
(ABA
ROLI) are conducting “Southeast Asia
Legal Advocacy Training of Trainers. The training aims at
expanding the
knowledge of
participants’ legal skills which further be used together with other
civil
society leaders to influence the development of the ASEAN
Intergovernmental
Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) and other ASEAN bodies and reinforce
their
work on human rights issues at the national level.
The
first Training of
Trainers (TOT) will be conducted in Bali, on 25-28 July 2012. We will
cover the
travel and accommodation costs for enlisted participants. We are opening
registration for 20 participants from across South East Asia. If you are
interested in applying, please fill the registration form and submit it
back to
us before or by 29 June 2012. Women
lawyers are strongly encouraged to apply.
Enclosed
with this
invitation are the Concept Note of the ToT and the registration form.
Shall you
have any inquiry, please do not hesitate to contact Febi Yonesta (febionesta@gmail.com)
