William Nicholas Gomes
/// Must Do His Homework Diligently
When William Nicholas Gomes, a Bangladeshi “rights” activist quoted His Majesty the King of Cambodia saying to the ASEAN Secretary Dr. Surin Pitsuwan that “beyond achieving material progress, it is important to develop a peaceful and sustainable region,” and he added right after this quote his own villain prophecy with the same bold letter by painting a dark picture about Cambodia and the Cambodian leadership with the nastiness of his heart saying: “Failure to fully address forced evictions and related widespread human rights abuses not only violates Cambodia’s international obligations, it also risks undermining social stability and economic development,” William Nicholas Gomes has demonstrated his very high degree of dishonesty and his vicious attempt to throw off readers to think that those two quotes are the words of His Majesty the King. What’s a shame! This is a writing technique of this “rights” activist who trampled to feet the right of the readers who need to get the facts and the truth. He made up connection where connection does not exist at all. A regular good reader will see clearly what this person is made of: a true activist who does not hesitate to twist and turn the realities, the facts and the truth for the purpose of stirring up a developing and harmonious society, in this case, Cambodia.
Getting to know who William Nicholas Gomes is, in effect, diminishes the value of the contents of his letter on 24 January 2012 and reduces the value of this communication to almost rubbish. Three cardinal sins have been committed by William Nicholas Gomes in his letter, which are the followings:
• William Nicholas Gomes should “see the log in his eyes,” and should not look for a speck in other people eyes. It would very well have been beneficial to certain segments of Bangladesh society from his doing as an activist and caring about the good people of Bangladesh. Had William Nicholas Gomes kept himself informed about Cambodia’s development, progress, and steady growth in the past twelve years since Cambodia achieved national reconciliation, internal security, safety all over territory under her sovereignty, and harmony among all the people living in Cambodia, under the win-win policy and the development programs, i.e. institutional, structural, legal, social and economic thanks to the wise leadership of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, William Nicholas Gomas would not have had to sell out his head to the Cambodian opposition and some politically oriented NGOs.
• In citing the 2009 recommendation of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR), a body of the United Nations charged with monitoring the implementation of International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), William Nicholas Gomes has thought that he is free to make wild allegations whenever they fit his political agenda or the agenda of the Cambodian opposition party and some politically oriented NGOs with the support and funding or promises of funding of some big names international NGOs (INGOs). The municipality of Phnom Penh, and above it, the Royal Government of Cambodia follow strictly the rule of law to deal with the reclamation of public lands, illegitimately and unlawfully occupied and claimed by the citizens. The municipality of Phnom Penh does not have and does not carry the policy of “forced evictions,” a terminology coined by INGOs, passed along to the opposition and some local NGOs (LNGOs) with the understanding that forced evictions are associated with wholesale brutality, abuse, illegitimacy and illegality. Cambodia has become recently a democratic society, a nation of rule of law by desire, aspirations and the needs of the Cambodian people who had experienced the horror, devastation, brutality, death and sufferings for so long, ten generations to say the least, and they will never allow themselves to fall back into the chaos and calamity of the past once again. Small issues of social harmony among people, people with conflicting economic interests still exist. They have been patiently, legally and humanly resolved, by responsible government and administrative authorities, sometimes and for some particular cases at “the turtle pace,” to use an expression full of wisdom that Samdech Techo Hun Sen communicates with common people. William Nicholas Gomes should do his homework diligently, and when he did it he was likely to change his views about Cambodia.
• In writing the letter based solely on misleading information provided by the opposition party and the politically oriented INGOs and LNGOs and completely ignoring the positive longstanding commitment and activities of the municipality of Phnom Penh and above it, the Royal Government of Cambodia to sort the mess of the post Khmer Rouge genocidal regime after 7 January 1979, and realize countless social and economic achievements after national reconciliation since 1998, thus transforming the capital city of Phnom Penh day by day, month by month and year by year into a modern city in the region, William Nicholas Gomes did not help himself to become an authority in Cambodian affairs, but he joined the chorus of those who bark wildly while the caravan passes
The Phnom Penh Authority takes this opportunity to invite William Nicholas Gomes and the public at large to seek information from the Capital Hall of Phnom Penh through its website www.phnompenh.gov.kh or by mailing to info@phnompenh.gov.kh ,calling (855)23 722 739 , Wild allegations and wrong accusations will not help solve any problems, it rather aggravate the situation.
